MET Gala 2019

I always love to see the looks from the MET Gala each year, this years theme was very interesting to me and I loved the looks that were created!

This year’s theme for the Met Gala was Camp: Notes on Fashion. This is not to be confused with summer camp or roasting marshmallows around a campfire but rather to do with Notes on “Camp” by Susan Sontag. It was published in 1964. The best example of clothing that explains “Camp” are women’s clothing from the 20s’ like feather boas and beaded dresses. All very elaborate and ridiculous objects. You can read the whole essay here.

The best most understandable definition of “Camp” is Number 25 in her essay:

“25. The hallmark of Camp is the spirit of extravagance. Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of three million feathers.”

There are many examples of "camp" in fashion, probably the most memorable example would be Lady Gaga's Meat Dress from the 2010 MTV Music Awards. According to CR Fashion Book, the MET's "Camp: Notes on Fashion" will include more than 200 fashion objects, paintings, sculptures and drawings from the 17th century on. The Designers that will be featured in the exhibit are John Galliano, the late Karl Lagerfeld, Rei Kawakubo, Mugler, and Alexander McQueen. To read the whole article on the features of the exhibit click here.

The exhibition is made possible by Gucci's sponsorship, there are sure to be tons examples from their archives that capture the splendor of Camp as well.
